Hornell-Alfred Unitarian Universalist Society (HAUUS)

January/February 2014 Newsletter

HAUUS meets on the second and fourth Sunday’s of the month at 10:30 AM.  We are located at 198 Main St. in Hornell NY unless otherwise noted below.   All are Welcome.  For more information about HAUUS please call (607)698-4508 or (607)522-7803

January 12 – How do Tom Chulak’s (former head of the St Lawrence District) characteristics that measure the maturity of a Unitarian Universalist and John Mersereau’s objectives of a Unitarian Fellowship resonate with HAUUS?  John Mersereau was a life long Unitarian, a member of the Shelter Rock Church on Long Island and husband of Margaret whose membership in our fellowship spanned more than 3 decades. Chulak’s letter to SLD member churches and Fellowships in 2009, and Mersereau’s  notes  found in a crate of archived HAUUS materials will guide us in discussion of our growth , both as individuals, and as a group.

January 26 – No Need for Resolutions: Why make them?  For most of us we don’t keep them or we make such flimsy ones that they have no effect on us at all.  However, many of us think and feel we do need to take stock of who we are and where we are going.  What better time than the beginning of the New Year?  George Smith will facilitate this exploration.

February 9 – February for many of us is The Dismal Month.  “Even though it is the month of my birth and I love winter, by February especially the end of the month I am ready for a change.” Quote by George Smith.  February is winter’s last gasp with ups and downs and hints of spring. Our lives follow this same pattern of ups and downs with endings moving into new beginnings.  In this discussion we will look at February as a symbol for our lives.

February 23This Sunday Eli Thomas / Onondaga Wisdom Keeper / Artist / Teacher will be with us at HAUUS…   Eli teaches by sharing his artwork which represents his culture, traditions and connection to the Natural World.

News and Notes

Looking Ahead – We are looking for program facilitators from our membership.  Often the programs we like the best are those that are led by our own members.  Please be thinking about what program you might want to share at HAUUS this year.

HAUUS members continue to support local food pantries.  Please bring non-perishable food items when you come to fellowship.

“We travel together, passengers on a little spaceship, dependent upon its vulnerable reserves of air and soil, all committed for our safety to its security and peace, preserved from annihilation only by the care, the work, and I will say the love we give our fragile craft. We cannot maintain it half-fortunate, half-miserable, and half-free in the liberation of resources undreamed of until this day. No craft, no crew can travel safely with such vast contradictions. On their resolution depends the survival of us all.”-Adlai Stevenson, Statesman and Unitarian layperson
